Meme AO3 tag game
Snagged this from [personal profile] meridian_rose

Go to your Works page on AO3, look at the tags, and see what the answers to these questions are. (Or any other site that has tags, I don’t know if FFnet or Wattpad does)

1. What rating do you write most fics under?
General Audiences (109 of 162 fics at AO3)

Not really a surprise honestly, I don't normally write adult/mature scenes so that would be a super rare thing to appear. Teen would mostly be for violence or implied mature scenes (which again rare).

2. What are your top 3 fandoms?
Smallville (41 at AO3)
X-Men Evolution (20 at AO3)
X-Men (Original Timeline Movies) (18 at AO3)

X-Men (comicsverse) (16 at AO3) and X-Men - All Media Types (16 at AO3) are right below the list. I kinda tend to do an amalgamation of Evolution, Movieverse & comics when I do anything X-Men related. Probably because I absorbed so much various canon stuff when I was younger.

Besides X-Men, Harry Potter (15 at AO3) and Marvel Cinematic Universe (11 at AO3)

3. What is your top character you write about?
Chloe Sullivan (Smallville) is at 38 at AO3.
Scott Summers (X-Men) is at 20 at AO3.

Haven't seen Smallville since it's ending, so I haven't really been writing about Chloe lately... Plus the whole actress thing makes me feel slightly guilty? (or something) But like I still love Chloe though. I'll have to eventually rewatch the series or hope Chloe appears in another adaption sometime.

Scott is still a character I want to write, besides him and Rogue have been my favorite X-Men characters since the 90s & I watched the Animated Series for the first time. Still hoping they'll make an appearance in the MCU eventually.

4. What are the 3 top pairings?
Rogue/Scott Summers (X-Men) is at 8 at AO3.
James Potter/Lily Evans Potter (Harry Potter) & James Potter/Mystique (HP/X-Men) are tied with 7  at AO3 due to the crossover series where Mystique takes Lily's place after the real Lily died as a child. It's a series that was supposed to have more parts to it, but probably won't honestly. Johnny Storm/Chloe Sullivan (Fantastic Four/Smallville) is also tied with 7 at AO3.
Clark Kent/Chloe Sullivan (Smallville) and Kara Danvers/Maxwell Lord (Supergirl TV series) are tied with 6 at AO3.

5. What are the top 3 additional tags?
Drabble (70 at AO3)
Crossover (50 at AO3)
Community: galorechallenge (29 at AO3)

6. Did any of this surprise you? e.g. what turned out to be your top tag.
The rating and fandoms didn't, I participated in a lot of various Smallville challenges - even started several of my own, including [community profile] sv100 and [community profile] svpromptstables plus several ran other Smallville or DC related communities. Same thing with the X-Men - participated in the xmenbigbang challenge and started [community profile] xmen15 and [community profile] xmen100. Besides I tended to write a lot of crossovers years ago and ran several crossover challenges including [community profile] galorechallenge (which is also not a surprise at one of my top tags) and xoverland at livejournal plus started several crossover communities.

Like I've stated before in various memes - not all my work are actually at AO3. And I combined some of my drabbles under one piece ("drabble collections") so the numbers are actually skewed. Just means I'll have to try and finish adding my older work.

But anyway, my top tag is not a surprise. I mostly write drabbles or ficlets or one shots. Honestly larger fics & multi-chaptered works are rare. Drabbles were mostly inspired by various prompt challenges at livejournal that were only 100 words allowed so when you participate in a lot of those, it's not really a surprise tag.

Honestly the only thing that really surprised me were the ship tags - but I think that just means I need to actually add my older works to AO3. I still think Scott/Rogue and Clark/Chloe would be one of the top ones, but I think the others would be lower.

I will probably do this again, but with my dreamwidth fic community [community profile] harpiewriting which I feel like would have a better fandom/character/pairing representation. Since I only use fandom/character/pairings tags there, I can't say for sure the "additional tags" situation would be different, especially since we (or I at least) definitely didn't start using tags the AO3 way until sometime after joining AO3. Numbers would be skewed higher for ratings, but General Audiences would still be the top rating at least. And now I'm limited to 1000 tags so we'll see (I'm at 932!).

Edit 11/3/2025: The below stats are using my fic community[community profile] harpiewriting - [TAGS page]

1. What rating do you write most fics under?
General Audiences (496 of 655 fics) with Teen at 126/655. Originally the community was separated by "G/PG or K/K+" but once I realized there was only a 1000 tag limit for communities here at dreamwidth, I combined the two ratings - they were basically the same thing anyway - at least in my eyes.

2. What are your top 3 fandoms?
Smallville (167)
X-Men (91)
Harry Potter (67)
Twilight (61)
Supernatural (54)
Heroes (53)

So Smallville (Crossover tag 86) and X-Men (Crossover tag 54) are still the top fandoms, as is Harry Potter (Crossovers tag 55) still technically in third place, just numbers are a little higher. Twilight (Crossover tag 6) is close behind, which honestly I forgot how much I wrote for that fandom - granted it's mostly drabbles written for twilight100 and various other prompt tables. Supernatural (Crossover tag 47) is next but unlike the others is mostly crossovers and Heroes (Crossover tag 24) fandom rounds out with the next closest and only about half are crossovers.

3. What is your top character you write about?
Chloe Sullivan (Smallville) is at 128 tags.
Scott Summers (X-Men) has 50 tags.
Hermione Granger (Harry Potter) has 50 tags.

Again same characters, although Hermione basically joins the team. What can I say? I connect a lot and love those characters. Honestly I'm surprised Rogue from X-Men (33 tags) wasn't part of it or even the next one. It's actually Leah from Twilight (45 tags) again thanks to twilight100.

4. What are the 3 top pairings?
AC/Chloe (Smallville) is at 24 tags
Chloe/Clark (Smallville) is at 16 tags
Rogue/Scott Summers (X-Men) is at 13 tags.
Emmett/Leah (Twilight) is at 13 tags

I'm glad I was at least right about Chloe/Clark & Rogue/Scott up above, although I forgot I signed up a table or two for Chloe/AC ship. The fact that it's beating Chloe/Clark & Chloe/Oliver was shocking - I guess in my head, I more works of them.

5. What are the top 3 additional tags?
Drabbles
Crossovers
Canon Divergence

So basically the same thing as the AO3 but I switched out community: [community profile] galorechallenge so something is fairly common in my works besides crossovers and say fluff or fluff adjacent? Again I use only fandom / year published / rating / characters / ships tags so you'd have to go through all of my work to catch the "additional tags" options but I think Canon Divergence would be a great option, or at least close enough.

6. Did any of this surprise you? e.g. what turned out to be your top tag.

Honestly I think the Twilight and Heroes fandoms being so close surprised me. It's been ages since I looked at those works or hell even watched the fandoms (or read in the case of Twilight).  The Top 3 Pairings option also surprised me. This is mainly due to the Chloe/AC (Smallville) ship.

It's interesting you write so many Gen fics. I'm constantly reading about people saying they only read/write explicit fics, that there's no reason to ever look at anything nonsexual so this is a pleasant surprise. I tend to stick 'teen' on most things because I'm generally writing in teen and above fandoms :)

Nostalgic, to see your favourite characters and shows from back in the day isn't it!

Drabbles is another less used tag at the archive, so yay for you doing your thing and it being common for your fics :) It's great to have challenge communities that you can be active in and generate fic :)

I hope you had fun doing the meme :)

The weird thing is that with the last few years I've mostly read teen & above fics with a few gen thrown in if I catch one interesting enough, or honestly if the summary catches my eye or depending on the fandom & if it's new I'll read basically every story for whatever ship I love from the fandom. Or at least I try to until I get distracted with something new or old. Honestly I think I'm more comfortable reading them, than actually writing them due to lack of RL experience and I feel like I wouldn't do it justice. Or at least that's what I tell myself.

It is very nostalgic to see my favorite characters & shows again! It makes me want to watch them again to see if I still feel the same way. Are there any fandoms you used to belong to that you would like to get back into?

I actually got a flame (do people still use that term? or maybe it was actually spam) from a "guest" the other day on AO3 on one of my drabbles saying I was just writing them for kudos and I was disgrace or whatever - and it was a big long jumble of words - honestly I just deleted it/marked it for spam but for a second there it was a soul crushing moment not going to lie... I didn't even read it fully because it upset me so much. If I was writing drabbles for kudos or comments that would be laughable at best. Like you said drabbles are less used on the archive - and probably due to lack of attention they actually receive. I only recently even looked at some of my comments/kudos counts due to the memes.

Challenge communities are great and I think the time crunch sometimes motivates me. Or if they offer little banners. ♥

I did indeed have fun doing the meme, hopefully you did as well! :)

I hear on "lack of experience" ;) But oddly when I did the Alphabet meme I was coming across more mature fics I'd written. Everything's cyclical and I'll delve into that again maybe? These were fandoms where I had communities at LJ though and got good feedback before posting elsewhere, so I think I felt more confident 'back in the day'.

Thank you for asking that question. It's making me think, which would I go back to? There are fandoms I look at and think about revisiting at least once to use for the 100 fandoms challenge.
I wrote a lot of "Da Vinci's Demons" for example, "Legend of the Seeker" (huge amounts because of the LJ comms), and "Black Sails". But some fandoms I wouldn't feel confident about writing without revisiting the source material first and that's not high on my priorities. Or it holds some discomfort, like Da Vinci's Demons, where it brings back memories of a time period and fandom friends that I'm not keen to dwell on. So it's all about feeling that rush again that demands to be rewritten before I can go back to some of them.

<i and it was a big long jumble of words - honestly I just deleted it/marked it for spam</i> I'm reading lots of people getting nasty comments of various kinds and honestly this sounds like spam. But it still does hurt. I'm sorry that happened. And yes, no one is posting drabbles to get kudos! Porn without plot maybe but is there a better way to avoid hits than a gen drabble in a smaller or older fandom!

I feel a mix of things when I do the memes. Nostaliga for good times, memories of less good things, amazement at what I used to accomplish, fics I'm still proud of, fics I now find typos in (agggh!), fics that I'd maybe write differently now, all the different fandoms I've loved or just dabbled in. &hearts;

"These were fandoms where I had communities at LJ though and got good feedback before posting elsewhere, so I think I felt more confident 'back in the day'."

Yes! I hear you! I miss that time period so much...

I wrote a lot of "Da Vinci's Demons" for example, "Legend of the Seeker" (huge amounts because of the LJ comms), and "Black Sails" ... But some fandoms I wouldn't feel confident about writing without revisiting the source material first and that's not high on my priorities. Legend of the Seeker ♥ I remember loving that one (loved Cara and Richard mostly, but main cast was great), I haven't watched Black Sails yet & I never even heard of Da Vinci's Demons although it sounds interesting so I'm adding that to my TBW pile. But I'm sooo sorry that the fandom holds such discomfort! That sucks - I don't think I have any that really hold any discomfort toward any fandom besides maybe only with their creators (JKR, Joss Whedon) or actress (Allison Mack of Smallville). Maybe some of the shipping wars b*llsh*t throughout the years. Maybe my brain is just blocking a lot of the negatives out.

I want to do the 100 fandoms challenge as well, and yeah I don't think I could write for most of my fandoms without at least revisiting the material as well, but sometimes I just want to skim through them instead but I don't actually like skimming things, if that makes sense? Like I'm the one that usually reads a book series from book one, same thing with films and shows. But I don't have the time as much as I used to so not sure how that'll work. Wikis only have so much & there's definitely a lack of fansites to get any type of canon resources to reference.

Nostaliga for good times, memories of less good things, amazement at what I used to accomplish, fics I'm still proud of, fics I now find typos in (agggh!), fics that I'd maybe write differently now, all the different fandoms I've loved or just dabbled in. ♥
That's good to hear! ♥ And I totally hear you on the finding typos - lost count on how many times I edited something due to that. And also I totally get the whole amazement feeling of what you accomplished because yeah I totally felt that too when I looked at the year tag at my fic journal to see how many I did per year (highest year was 2008 = 219 !!!)

I definitely have to check out more of your work, I feel like I did back in LJ days, but that's been so long I'm not sure.

I loved Caa ! My main focus was Cara, Darken, Zedd. I was very active at https://peoplespalace.livejournal.com/ which was for the Mord'Sith/dark side :) I still have the icon shown and a darken one that I use for any angst!

Black Sails can be a rough watch in places for many reasons.
I loved Da Vinci's Demons and then the last season didn't do it for me, at least the second half of it. But that's why there's fanfic ♥

It's interesting because there are fandoms where i like the ~vibes I guess and don't want to rewatch the whole thing again so I watch clips and fanvids, and others where I really enjoy rewatching episodes. You're more dedicated than me to rewatch thoroughly :)
