A little Tag discussion because why not?
Not sure how many people actually read my journal, but I did realize that I'm kinda short on the Fannish 50 challenge (only 22 things so far posted to my TAG), and I found myself doing something that I've done countless times before, but I figured I'd open up to discussion to see if anyone else does this or am I just crazy? Or anal. Lol, probably the latter.

Anyway, so needless to say after I went on to [community profile] moviefanfiction and somehow ended up in the [community profile] batfic community. As I was glancing at them, I noticed several entries (or a hell of a lot) do not have any tags (which I will admit is a pet peeve of mine), so I was OK, I need to fix that - so I tried adding tags... And I could add tags that were only already there, which fine OK.... Am I alone in doing? Going to random communities and adding tags? I know I tend to look at tags first in communities, most of the time to look up either fandoms I'm craving or character/pairings I like, so I kinda hate when no tags are available or I notice no one using them.

Also, am I alone in creating like a lot of tags for each of my communities? Like I would think you pre-create the tags, especially if you want them by alphabetical like moviefanfiction, or by character such as batfic? I mean I know these particular communities isn't active much but still.

I mean I get missing certain characters (especially newer or less written about characters) but I would assume at least the most popular/common villains or characters would at least have their tags (Edit: Actually they ended up having nearly all the characters I needed to tag {except for Damian apparently? or I just couldn't find the correct tag format}, but anyway I've seen the same thing happen in other communities before). I know not all places like to add pairing tags which is fine. Like for [community profile] mcu100 and [community profile] xmen100 I have over 400/500 tags between any potential characters/pairings/universes used. Same goes with [community profile] tvfanfiction which has 400 tags and [community profile] uc_xmen has over 300. Not sure exactly how many are used at them, but at least the options are available.

I'm pretty sure LJ had it where if you were only a member and not an admin, you'd only see what's been used before and I think that makes people think the tags aren't there or exist thus no one even tries to tag them. I wish there was a way so you could see everything that is available. I thought if you hit the "Tag Entry" option after you post (even if just a member and not an admin) you could see them anyway but that didn't end up being the case with batfic - I had to do trial and error on getting the correct tags to show up. Granted it's been a long time since I posted works to communities at livejournal so maybe I'm remembering wrong.

I know some communities like to leave their communities open to people adding tags on their own such as [community profile] marvelrarepairs or [community profile] marvel_fanworks to name two that I know of which is kinda great - at least people tend to tag their stuff... but it also kinda causes choas? Because someone forgets how the format goes or doesn't pay attention and then suddenly you have multiple tags of the same character or fandom or whatever.

What do you prefer?

I am in no way trying to insult the communities (or their respected owners) spoken about here, they are simply used as actual examples of things I've seen countless times in the past. Honestly it's also a bit to promote them a bit as well so more people can post to them.

I don't think you're alone, I've seen many communities create the tags for the entire community. I've created a lot of tags mys for comms myself; however, I also let people create tags because I understand that I don't know all of the fandoms or tags people might need.

I think that something that helps with that chaos it's making a Tagging Guidelines post like this one from [community profile] vampiremedia. Most people have used the tagging guidelines already. However, I know that we're a tiny comm in comparison to most things.

I know that, as a member, what I prefer is having a post like that as a guide if members are allowed to create tags. If not, a post in the comm that's like "comment here to get new tags".

As a mod, I prefer letting people create their own tags and correcting them if necessary. In comms where I co-mod like [community profile] polyamships, we create tags as needed.

I'm going to have to try and do a Tagging Guidelines for all my communities I think or make a post for "comment here to get new tags" post at least. I do at least have to update the profiles a bit more. Only did some minor edits when I added them from LJ for the most part. I do appreciate your Tagging Guidelines posts! ♥

Most of the time I see vague details on comm profiles (other times not so much) on how to tag in the communities if they are where members are allowed to create any tag and the mods no longer update/fix the tags, such as HERE where you have two Captain Americas, two Black Widows, two Iron Mans plus here where like "fan fiction" "fic" "fanfic" all exist, plus so many other examples on that particular community. I mean I do appreciate that that tags are used at all - which sometimes tags aren't used (by members themselves) or the community hasn't been updated in a long while so no one's updated/fixed the doubles/triples tags or even backtracked the past entries to see if any or all of that tags were added (now granted that's more time consuming to do, so I totally get why marvel_fanworks with over 500 posts)- but I think that's just be a me thing where overall I find myself unable to stop myself from going through all the entries to fix/add them such as I did with batfic. moviefanfiction didn't seem to have added the rest of the alphabet to it's tagging system so only 12 tags exist and only 4 letters have tags.

make a post for "comment here to get new tags" Good idea. I've also occasionally seen a "!need a tag" tag used so mods can load up any entries with that and see the posts. Users will often then make a note, "Please can I have a tag for Awesome Fandom" or "Mods I need a user tag" so you can quickly see what needs creating and adding.

that's an excellent idea!

I think that if it makes a comm run smoother, it should be common courtesy to use at least the medium or fandom tag

This is interesting and I had to come back to reply when I'd had chance to fully read and think about it.

I started and then forgot about the Fannish 50 challenge!

I've never tried tagging entries that aren't mine at a community. I think I've always assumed I don't have permission. As you say you often can't create new tags but I didn't know any community allowed non-admins to add tags to other people's entries. It is annoying when something isn't tagged and could be!

I would think you pre-create the tags, especially if you want them by alphabetical I think this is something that happens with a) experience - if you've later tried adding tags to many entries you realise when next starting a community to try and put a system in place early! and b) you're an organised person who sees the need for tagging well. And some people lack A and/or aren't B.

I don't recall the LJ system but when posting at DW, you can usually type into the tag dropdown when posting/editing an entry and see what entries pop up?

Because someone forgets how the format goes or doesn't pay attention and then suddenly you have multiple tags of the same character or fandom or whatever This is why there's a strong argument for only admins creating tags and people posting adding a note, "please can I have a tag for Awesome Fandom".
Because even forgetting a space in formatting will mess up the nice tags, Fandom:AwesomeFandom, Fandom: AwesomeFandom, Fandom AwesomeFandom and Fandom Awesome Fandom are as I'm sure you're aware all *different* tags!
